Ski Routes

LQ Outpost (https://valkyradventures.com/lodge/the-outpost-mount-lequereux/) is a back-country hut (plus sauna) about 30km south-east of Nakusp BC. Nine of us were up there for six days of skiing. The hut is at about 7200ft, accessible only by helicopter, with wonderful tree skiing below and alpine terrain above.

We had six days of most excellent skiing. Fresh snow when we arrived, and maybe another meter during the week. We found steep and stable lines among the trees down from the hut. Fresh snow and good stability - we could find almost no new slab even with all the fresh snow.

25 Feb Heli in, beacon practice Total 24,040 Total 24,120 Total 18 Total 42:49 Ski Routes Heli in, Bell 205 (8-passenger) As usual for this group, some problems. Tom & Sue's flight to Salt Lake (on the way to Spokane) was canceled, but they had planned a few days in SLC so that worked ok. Lino's flight to Kelona was canceled. He re-booked to Spokane. Not too bad, but now Mark was on his own for the drive from Kelona to Nakusp. The big one was Hepp. First, bumped from the Saturday flight to Seattle, on the way to Spokane. Switched to Minneapolis, but then toilet and tow bar malfunction - missed connection. Missed standby on next flight by one seat. Bought new ticket via Denver, arrived Spokane Sunday. John and Lino then had to drive - dumping snow all the way Spokane to Nakusp. Amazingly, Both John and Lino made it on the last possible window for the helicopter flight.
27 Feb Broom 4,180 4,040 4 6:48 Day 1 Concerned with stability, we tried to ski lower angle and in the trees. Multiple laps on Broom. Mostly low, with a few steep pitches. Weather: -13c, snowing.
28 Feb Windy 4,040 4,150 4 7:52 Day 1 Started out for Machine to stay in lower angle, large trees. But side-tracked to Windy / Magic. First run dicey - very steep. But everything stable. So we did another three laps. Snow was fabulous. Some of the best snow and best runs ever. Weather: -13c, snowing.
1 Mar Machine 3,480 3,520 3 6:43 Day 1 Half lap on Magic before going over to Machine. Two laps on Machine, down to about 5700 ft. The first skin up was long and hard (breaking trail) but Lino strictly enforced a 10min rotation. Terrain was steep and treed. Snow was wonderful (again). Weather: -13c, snowing.
2 Mar Machine 4,760 4,770 2 8:26 Day 1 A second day on Machine. First run was with Hepp & Eric, skier's left, down to about 4980ft - almost the stream-bed. Second run was skier's right and a bit of a mess. Cliffed out towards the top of the run. Then had trouble finding tracks and the up-track. Transitioned at abtou 5100ft. Lino and Mark went all the way to the bottom. The hike back to the hut was epic - full-on blizzard with wind almost knocking us over. Couldn't see the hut from 100m. Hepp, Amy, Rodney did another half-lap and the weather cleared by the time they came back to the hut. Weather: -13c, snowing.
3 Mar Illicit smile, back up Boarderland 5,000 4,980 3 9:00 Day 1 Sue, Amy, Rodney and I Went looking for Illicit Smile (what we thought was Spear), W-facing off the Windy ridge. Hiked up ridge to top at 7300ft. Then down through the trees, trying to keep skier's right. Steep and wonderful snow. Entered Ilicit Smile at about 6200ft. Down to the bottom, up to 6300ft for another lap, then up to 6150ft and traversing skier's left and bottomed out about 5400ft. Skin to the bottom of Boarderland, and skin track from Hepp, Mark, Lino, Annie. Weather: -13c, snowing.
4 Mar Broom and Boarderlands 2,680 2,660 2 4:00 Day 1 First run down Broom from the ridge: Sue, Lino, Mark, and me. The top was steep and wonderful snow. At about 5700ft we slabbed skier's left to access the bottom of Boarderland. We skinned up about 6800ft, then down to the very bottom on the skier's left of Boarderland. I was shattered from the full week, and Lino and Mark did another lap. Weather: -13c, snowing.
